Overview

Currently using Illustrator CS3 to do this. Unfortunately that ties down a lot of processing to my aging laptop.

The conversions:

tex --(pdflatex)--> pdf --(Illustrator)--> svg --(Illustrator/Batik)--> png

tex2svg, would cut Illustrator out of the roundtrip.
